Manawee Garden Centre

  • BWEP funding $30,072
  • Water savings 3.3 million litres a year

Background

Manawee Garden Centre has been operating for almost 20 years at Buderim on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Prior to implementing water saving initiatives with the assistance of BWEP funding, the nursery relied on reticulated and bore water.

Water saving initiatives

Manawee Garden Centre has installed a range of water saving products including:

  • a 22,500 litre rainwater storage tank
  • a 3,000 litre recycled water settlement tank
  • three holding tanks with a combined storage capacity of 95,000 litres
  • an integrated water recycling system
  • a multiphase water filtration system
  • reautomation of sprinkler head systems

In addition to these systems, the nursery has identified water saving practices to reduce its overall consumption including:

  • repositioning plants to optimise watering
  • limiting hand watering
  • resetting automated timers on watering systems.

Water saving achievements

By catching and recycling over a quarter of the water used each day, the centre saves 50,000 litres of water a week. Overall, the centre has slashed its use of reticulated water by 50%
